Vinhos Verdes: The Green Wine Of Portugal

Ever heard of a green wine? That is exactly what Vinhos Verdes means in Portuguese but actually it is not green in color. The name has been given to this wine to signify the attributes of green color, i.e., bloom and enthusiasm. This is one of the best wines of Portugal, which started producing wines during its Roman occupation. Most of these wines were sent to Rome and they became very popular there.

Vinho Verde's youthful name is derived from its age, as mostly these wines are not very old. They are usually bottled not later than five months and are drunk in their youth. Although both red and white wines are produced, the red wines are not normally exported. Trajadura, Loureiro and Alvarinho are some of the famous grapes from which white wines are made. Out of these, the Alvarinho grapes produce the strongest of the white Vinho Verde wines.

The sparkling Vinho Verde wines get their sparkle because of the carbon dioxide contained in them. The prevention of the escape of carbon dioxide from the fermenting liquid causes the sparkle in the wine. The basic process involves taking either a dry white wine or a red table wine and adding enough sugar to the same. This will increase the pressure inside to about 5 or 6 atmospheres after fermentation and if the carbon dioxide does not escape. Wine is also matured in bottles but it should not be transferred, filtered or rebottled as that would involve adding sulphur dioxide to avoid oxidation, which would lead to tampering of the fragile aroma that had been gained through ageing.

Vinho Verdes normally has high alcohol content and it has low acidity. It should be properly chilled and it should not be over matured when you drink it. Naturally, its smell is of young wine. There is a fine difference between aroma and bouquet as grapes give rise to aroma and the finished wine gives the smell of bouquet.

The two main aspects of any wine are its flavor and its aroma. It is very difficult to disassociate one from the other. Evolution of any wine might be more concerned with flavors but the aroma is also equally important. Many people prefer rich aromas, something like whipped heavy cream that would make the wine alluring and delectable.The flavors are also important and are on the creamy trail. Tannin with its various qualities helps in enriching the flavors.

Things are changing everywhere and modernity is catching up. The vineyards have been modernized and along with them modern wines are being produced for the ultra modern consumer of today. The future varieties of Vinhos Verdes will be determined by the modernizations of the sub-regions in which authorized newer grape varieties will be cultivated. This will lead to an exotic new range of the colors, the flavors and the new wines' aromas.

Portugal's pride - the Vinhos verdes is the finest variety being produced there although it is expensive but it is worth it. It leaves a delectable taste in the mouth, something like the Port wine and it is a great add on to the salads and seafood dishes. Vinhos Verdes have a slight sparkle in them while they are being bottled. They are also very refreshing and possess a crispy and fruity tinge.
